# Pattern Unit

Math Unit Plan: Integrated Unit Grade 1 and 2 patterns and sorting

This is the introductory unit for the grade 1 and 2 school year. This unit will serve as a basis for all units to follow. In this unit students will be able to identify patterns, copy patterns, and create their own patterns. Students will be able to find patterns in their everyday life. Students will also be able to use patterns to solve problems and identify how using patterns is a part of their everyday life. The emphasis of this unit will be to use manipulatives and become familiar with working with others to solve problems.  Activities in this unit will include discussion, creating art, using pattern blocks, using sorting charts such as venn diagrams, and group work.  Students will also be able to identify attributes to sort objects by and identify that there are different ways of sorting objects.

Lesson 1: Introduction (short lesson)

O: Students will be  able to identify different ways that we sort things

O: Students will be able to state why we sort things

1. Discussion- When and why do we sort things in our lives
2. As a group sort different school supplies and state why they sorted them that way

Lesson 2: Sorting school supplies

O: Students will be able to sort school supplies into 2 groups

O: Students will be able to explain why they sorted the objects in that way

1. Draw 10 school supplies on the board
2. Ask the students to sort them into 2 groups (sorting page)
3. Ask the students to explain how they sorted the items

Lesson 3: Sorting people

O: Students will be able to sort students in their class into different groups

O: Students will be able to explain the sorting rule that they used

1. Give the students some examples of how people can be sorted- ask the students to form groups based on the given sorting rule
2. Students will complete the people sorting chart in their math books- classmates will be sorted into two groups- student must explain their own sorting rule

Lesson 4: Sorting balls (introduction to a Venn Diagram)

O: Students will be able to sort balls in 2 ways

O: Students will be able to use a Venn Diagram to sort objects that have a commonality

O: Students will be able to understand that he middle section of the Venn Diagram contains sorting qualities of both circles

1. Have the students work in 2 groups (grade 1’s and 2’s)- each group has a set of 2 hula hoops and a selection of balls- the groups will work together to sort the balls in different ways
2. Following each sort the groups will share how they sorted their objects

Lesson 5: Sorting things 3 ways

O: Students will be able to discuss how to sort things

O: Students will be able to work as a group to solve sorting problems

O: Students will be able to sort thinks in 3 ways

1. The students will work in 2 groups- each group will be given bowls of random objects and hoops for sorting
2. The students will work to sort their random objects first in 2 ways with no overlapping, then with overlapping, then in 3 ways
3. Students will share their sorting rules with the class
4. Students will complete the child sorting page

Lesson 6: Similarities and Differences

O: Students will be able to identify objects which are similar

O: Students will be able to identify objects which are different

O: Students will be able to share why identifying similarities and differences is important in making a pattern

1. Quick draw- show the students several quick draws- first they must identify which item is similar, then different
2. Have the students work in groups to identify similarities and differences between two pictures
3. Ask the students to explain why identifying similarities and differences is important in creating patterns
4. Students will complete the similar and different pages of their workbook

Lesson 7: Copying patterns

O: Students will be able to copy patterns from pattern cards

O: Students will be able to identify different attributes of a pattern

O: Students will be able to work together to continue a given pattern

1. Explain to students what an attribute is- ask them to list some different attributes
2. Have the students rotate through pattern copying stations- they must first copy the pattern using the bead strings then create a second set

Lesson 8: Pattern

O: Students will be able to identify what comes next in a pattern

O: students will be able to complete different patterns

O: Students will be able to identify patterns that occur in the school and the environment

O: Students will be able to explain what an attribute is

1. Go on a pattern walk throughout the school- ask the students to share different patterns that they see in the school
2. Show the students some different patterns on the board- ask them to think of what comes next
3. Students will complete the what comes next worksheets

Lesson 9: Completing patterns

O: Students will be able to complete attribute block patterns

O: Students will be able to explain what an attribute is

O: Students will be able to identify different attributes

1. Review with the students what an attribute is
2. Students will be paired up- they will rotate through a sequence of pattern cards and complete the patterns
3. Ask the students to identify what the attributes are in each pattern (size, colour, shape)

Lesson 10: Making patterns

O: Students will be able to make a pattern using 2 attributes (grade 1) and 3 attributes (grade 2)

O: Students will be able to explain their pattern

O: Students will be able to use linking cubes to create their pattern

O: Students will be able to share their pattern with other students

1. Show the students some pattern examples using the linking cubes, ask them if it is a pattern or not and why- ask them to describe the attributes
2. Students will use the linking cubes to create a pattern (2 colours grade 1, 3 colours grade 2)
3. Students will share their patterns with their classmates
4. Students will discuss their patterns and how some patterns are similar and different
5. Students will experiment with different patterns and changing patterns- students will discuss how they changed their pattern
6. Students will complete the cube pattern page in their workbook

Lesson 11: Pattern Practice

O: Students will be able to practice making patterns using colours

O: Students will be able compare patterns

1. Students will practice making patterns using pattern beads- they may try experimenting with more attributes and colours
2. Students use the pattern stamps to record their patterns
3. students will complete the pattern practice page in their workbooks

Lesson 12: Multiple attributes

O: Students will be able to describe different attributes

O: Students will be able identify changing attributes in a pattern

O: Students will be able to make a pattern using 2 attributes

1. Students will use the attribute blocks to create patterns with 2 attribues
2. Students will use stamps to create a picture of their pattern-
3. Students will explain their pattern- teacher will record their answers on the pattern and include the sheet in the students learning portfolio
4. Students will complete attribute page in their workbook together

Lesson 13: Comparing Patterns

O: Students will be able use stamps to create a pattern

O: students will be able to compare their pattern with a partners pattern

O: Students will be able to describe similarities and differences between the 2 patterns

1. Students will create a pattern on the workbook page
2. Students will work with a partner to discuss how their patterns are similar and different
3. Teacher will help students write their answers on the page- while teacher circulates the students will work on pattern puzzles

Lesson 14: What is the Rule

O: students will be able to explain what a pattern rule is

O: Students will be able to identify pattern rules in different patterns

O: students will be able to complete a pattern by applying a pattern rule

1. Show the students some examples of patterns- explain what the pattern rule is in each pattern
2. Show the students some more patterns and ask them if they can figure out what the pattern rule is in groups
3.  Students will work with attribute blocks to complete patterns according to the pattern rule
4. Students will complete the rules page of their workbook

Lesson 15: My Pattern

O: Students will be able to create a pattern using coloured shapes

Students will create a piece of art using a pattern of coloured shapes

O: students will be able to create a pattern using beads

O: Students will be able to identify patterns that exist in clothing and jewelry

1. Students will draw a picture of a bead pattern in their workbook
2. Students will create a bead pattern on a string

Lesson 17: Increasing patterns

O: students will be able to explain how to increase a pattern on different planes

O: students will explain how they increased their patterns

1. Show students some examples of patterns- ask them how they might increase these patterns
2. Create a pattern using attribute blocks for the students to increase-  students wil describe their increased pattern- ask them to discuss why they increased their pattern in that way
3. Students will use coloured shapes to create an expanding pattern in their workbooks

Lesson 18: Pattern puzzles

O: Students will be able to use patterns to solve a puzzle

O: Students will be able to describe what they learned about patterns

1. Students will solve some picture puzzles
2. Students will complete the math journal pages explaining what they learned about patterns

*Oral Quiz as students are working on puzzles
