What is the Parent's Role in Education?
Parents play a vital role in their children's education. Learning is a process that does not end when the bell rings Monday through Friday, except for holidays. It is a continuous process all week long, all year long!
As a parent what can you do? BE INVOLVED!
What can be gained? EVERYTHING!
Did you know that when parents are involved, student achievement increases?
Did you know that when parents are involved, classrooms generally get additional supplies needed?
Did you know that when parents are involved, communication is better?
Did you know that when parents are involved, the teacher is able to be more effective?
Did you know that when parents are involved, parents are able to help their child at home?
According to The Reading Teacher (April 1995), parents assist and suport instruction in 3 ways: as teaching partners in the classroom, as resources in the classroom, and as at-home teachers.
So, What Can Parents DO?
Parents as teaching partners in the classroom:
1. Share ideas orally.
2. Tutor individuals.
3. Support written communication.
4. Share integrated language experiences.
5. Promote after-school study.
Parents as resource persons in the classroom:
1. Share personal stories.
2. Share literature.
3. Share events.
Parents as teachers at home:
1. Make collections.
2. Share mail--letters and postcards.
3. Share books.
4. Share journals.
5. Share family memories.
6. Share oral histories.
In our classroom, we encourage parents to be involved! In addition to those listed above, our other scheduled parent events, we encourage a partnership in the classroom on a daily basis.
1. Read with your child DAILY.
2. Review the TAKE-HOME Folder DAILY.
3. Read the WEEKLY NEWSLETTERS.
4. Read and write in your child's FAMILY JOURNAL WEEKLY.
5. Come in and share a story with us.
6. Help your child find a SNIPPET to share.
