3rd & 4th Block Civcs

Lesson plans for week of 13-17 August

Mondau August 13th:

Students will come into the class and engage in the POD.  After that they will be given the Civics Pre-Test.  This is a baseline test that will give me a clear level of where the students start out and where they should be headed to after the semester.  For those students that finish early finishers will be given the Code of Hammurabi Activity Packet.  When all have finished the Pre-Test, It shall be quickly gone over. Students will then be broken into groups, so that they can create their charts of needed laws within a society. When this is complete each group will share their ideas with the class.  The Groups will then be given 5-10 minutes to discuss the code of Hammurabi, and then in turn, complete the writing part of the exercise by using a Kagan charting strategy by going from point to point to write their thoughts on charts about the room I shall be monitoring the accountable talk by moving around the room, listening to the conversation, prompting and when needed redirecting students.  I shall ask each group to present their information to the class and monitor any discussion, ensuring that the classroom rules of decorum and behavior are maintained.

. A discussion of this code as an ancient means of meeting the need for laws in a society will close the class.

Tuesday Augut 14th:

Students will start off class with POD.  After the POD The Students will be taken through the Charting intro activity for Chapter #1.  The students will be free to call and respond as long as they are on task, and they will direct the charting activity. 

 After the overview and charting activity the students will be split in to their learning groups and complete the Guided Reading activities for Chapter 1. I shall be monitoring the accountable talk by moving around the room, listening to the conversation, prompting and when needed redirecting students.  I shall ask each group to present their information to the class and monitor any discussion, ensuring that the classroom rules of decorum and behavior are maintained.

 Early Finishers shall be given the Vocabulary Crossword Activity for Chapter 1 for a class—Overnight Activity. 

Wednesday August 15th:

Students will start off with the POD, and then roll into the day’s lesson with the intro charting of the Reign of King James II of England and the problems that led to the Glorious Revolution and the ascension of William and Mary to the Throne. Students will be told that their task today is to interpret the Magna Carta and The English Bill of Rights, and then using their understanding to respond in writing to the prompts that they have been assigned. They will share their findings with the class.  They shall also complete a short reading on Locke and Hobbes, and answer a question as to what the basic principle of their Philosophy was. I shall be monitoring the accountable talk by moving around the room, listening to the conversation, prompting and when needed redirecting students.

 

Overnight—Read Chapter 2

Thursday August 16th:Class will begin with the POD after the intro to the lesson on Board and Chart the students will break into their study groups where they will complete Guided Reading activities for Chapter 2. They shall work in concert with each other in whatever manner they decide will be their discipline, as long as the work load is shared equally. I shall be monitoring the accountable talk by moving around the room, listening to the conversation, prompting and when needed redirecting students. Early finishers will be given the Vocabulary/Crossword for Chapter 2, and all will complete for the overnight activity

Friday August 17th:

After completing the POD the students will have the Declaration of Independence read to them while it is presented on the Promethean Board.  Afterwards they will break into groups to complete the writing activity answering the questions based on developing an deeper understanding of the Declaration.  Following the Friday Main Concept quiz shall be administered.  Early finishers shall have a vocabulary worksheet from Teacher Worx assigned I shall be monitoring the accountable talk by moving around the room, listening to the conversation, prompting and when needed redirecting students.
