  • Distances in space are unimagineably huge that astronomers use the light-year as a common unit of measure.  A light-year is defined as the distance light travels in one year.  Light travels at a speed of approximately 300,000 km per second!  The closest star system to us is Alpha Centauri; approximately 4.3 light-years away.  How far is Alpha Centauri in terms of kilometers?  (This question or a related question might appear as a bonus question on your first test!)
