RELIGION STUDY GUIDE:  Chapter 16: We Gather For the Celebration of the Eucharist

Key Words

Assembly:  the community of people who join together for the celebration of Mass.

  1. We are united to Jesus Christ and to one another.

  2. Jesus told the disciples to stay close to him and one another.

  3. Jesus said, “I am the vine. You are the branches.”

  4. Jesus is with us each time we come together to celebrate the sacraments.

  5. He is with us in a special way when we receive him in the bread and wine that have become the Body and Blood of Chirst.

  6. Through Holy Communion, our venial sins are forgiven.

  7. The Church celebrates the Mass.

  8. Sunday is a special day for the Church.

  9. Sunday is also called the Lord’s Day because Jesus rose to new life on this day.

   10. Together with the priest, we celebrate the Mass.

   11.  The Mass is the greatest way to worship God.

   12.  During Mass we gather as a  community to: 1) praise and thank God, 

          2) listen to God’s Word, 3) remember and celebrate Jesus’ life, Death and 

          Resurrection, and 4) celebrate Jesus’ gift of himself in the Eucharist.

   13. The laws of the Church say that we must take part in the Mass every Sunday and on other    

         special days called Holy Days of Obligation.

   14.  At Mass, all that gather to pray are called the assembly.

   15.  Deacon: reads the Gospel, prays some special prayers, helps the priest.

   16. Altar Servers: help the priest and deacon with many things.

   17.  Readers: read the first two Bible readings, Responsorial Psalm and the Petitions.

   18.  Extraordinary Ministers (Eucharistic Ministers): help give out Holy Communion. 

           Often take  Communion to those who can not come to church.

   19.   We join together at Mass to show our love and thanks to God.

   20.  The beginning of Mass unites us as members of the Church. It prepares us to hear God's   

           Word and to celebrate the Eucharist.
