How to Fix Windows 10 Computer Won’t Sleep

Some users may occasionally encounter problems with the Sleep Mode on Windows 10. While trying to sleep Windows 10, many users complain that it won't go to sleep. An issue of this nature is not uncommon. There are a number of reasons for such an issue to occur. Windows 10 won't sleep due to third-party software interference, insufficient settings, and driver problems.

Sleep Mode issues Windows 10 users encounter can be divided into two types:

Activate the sleep mode

Make sure your PC is in sleep mode. It is possible that you turned off the mode or that it was changed by a third-party app.

  1. You can search the Start menu for Edit power plan, and select that option from the results.

  2. The dropdown menus next to Put the computer to sleep should not be set to Never on the following screen.

  3. Alternatively, if the setting is Never, pick a time and select it from the dropdown.

Find the programs that prevent your PC from sleeping

You may not be able to put your PC to sleep because of installed programs, and it's sometimes hard to discover which program is causing this issue.

Fortunately, Windows 10 includes a command that allows you to see which programs prevent your PC from entering sleep mode.

  1. Choose Run as administrator from the Start menu after searching for Command Prompt.

  2. Select Yes when prompted by User Account Control.

  3. Enter the following command in the Command Prompt window: powercfg /requests

  4. Your PC will no longer enter sleep mode when it's launched from the Command Prompt.

  5. Using the Command Prompt window, stop the programs. Check if your PC goes into sleep mode successfully. You can prevent Windows from starting that program when it boots if it does.

Allow the computer to sleep

Your PC must be set to default power settings for it to sleep. Software developed by third parties may mess up settings and cause issues in Windows 10 computer won’t sleep. To change the power settings to default, follow these steps:

  • Search for Edit Power Plan in the Windows 10 search box.

  • In the search result, click on Edit power plan.

  • The third step involves opening another window. Click on Change advanced power settings.

  • You will now see a new window called Power Options. Click the Restore plan defaults link.

  • Additionally, you can open the Multimedia properties window in the Power Options window. Once you open that, you can open When sharing media. You can select Allow the computer to sleep for both On battery and Plugged in options.
