Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at Denison Middle School! My name is Jen Simpson, and I am excited to be your student’s Language Arts teacher on the Lynx Team this year. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me. I check my email daily; it is easiest and fastest way to reach me. My email address is: Jennifer.Allen@polk-fl.net (Please check this frequently as I am in the process of a name change that will affect my email address). You may also contact me at school at 863-291-5353, or by writing a note in your student's Agenda.
Student Agendas are provided by the school and are designed to help students be organized; they are required in class every day to serve as a contact log, hall pass, and an organizational tool for assignments and other important dates. Please assist your student with the responsibility of keeping track of his/her Agenda so that it becomes a habit to carry it at all times. Each class has an Agenda Board with the week's assignments written in for students to copy into their Agendas. Students will receive a weekly participatory grade for having the Agenda filled out every day. This will be 5% of your student's total grade in each class--you are encouraged to review your student's Agenda for upcoming assignments and due dates. If you find your child is having difficulties transitioning or with the work in my class, I encourage you to contact me so that we can share our concerns and work together to find the best solution.
The first week of class is designed to help everyone get to know each other and to review classroom procedures, so there will not be any homework the first week. However, I will be sending home a questionnaire to help me get to know your child on August 23rd, so be sure to ask for the questionnaire. Any overnight homework in my class is work that is not finished in class that day. This is a Language Arts class, so writing assignments will be frequent; I always give a week's notice for major writing assignments, and there are usually multiple chances for writing improvements. I also assign projects throughout the school year; I will give advanced notice of any and all projects on the Agenda Board and on this webpage.
Please check back frequently for updates and new information throughout the year. I look forward to working with you and your student this year!
