The children have been working very hard in math this year!
At this point, your child should be able to do simple addition and even subtraction. It's okay, at this point, if they are still using their fingers or drawings to solve the problems. Many have begun using counting up or counting back to solve the problems.
In Calendar Math we have been working on telling time to the hour and half-hour. This is a difficult skill. If they ask you for help at home, please remind them to "start small" (the hour hand) and to "count big" (skip count by five) with the minute (big) hand. This will help them master this difficult concept.
The best way to help your child at home is to go over all math papers that come home, and help to make sure they are doing their math homework (sent home a couple of times each week). Showing an interest in your child's schoolwork reminds them that they are important to you and that school is important, too.
