The Body & Human Development

National Eating Disorders Association Educator Toolkit

This site has various informative sheets that can help an educator help students with eating disorders. Eating disorders to some people can be considered nutrition issues and mental health issues but they are always issues dealing with the body. Students may feel insecure about how they look and will turn to drastic measures to look "perfect". The different handouts included on the site are: a glossary of terms, frequently asked questions, common myths about eating disorders, the impact of eating disorders on functioning in school, Eating disorder signs specific to a school setting, school strategies for assisting students with eating disorders, a student information form, tips for communicating with the parents/guardians of students, why parent communication may be difficult, eating disorder treatment, education plan for students in treatment, tips for school psychologists, tips for school nurses, and tips for coaches.

Self Esteem

This is a lesson plan that can be used in the classroom about self esteem. Many students today have low self esteem for various reasons and it is important that as educators we try to help raise their self esteem levels. This could simply be telling them that you like their purse or a well thoughtout comment on a paper. Lesson plans like the one at the link are also good resources to use. I am not sure of the grade level for the lesson but after reading through it, I am positive that it can be altered to fit an english class.

 Eating Disorders

This is a lesson plan that I really like. The lesson can be altered to fit an English class which is good for me, and it is also informing students about eating disorders and the dangers of having an eating disorder. Throughout the lesson there are various discussion questions, essay questions and even research questions that students can write and talk about in class. Another project connected to the lesson that I like is the one where students create a public brochure that informs others about the dangers of eating disorders.

Eating Disorder Lesson

This is another lesson plan dealing with eating disorders. Many students are insecure about the way they look and turn to extremes to lose weight. It is important that students are aware of the different eating disorders and their harmful effects. It is also important that students know that they are unique and each person is beautiful regardless what popular media says the definition of beautiful is. A lesson is the best way to get across to students in the classroom.

The site offers other pages on  growth, bones, breast development, breath, diet, exercise, eye, fatigue, hair, image, lice, menstruation, normal, odor, penis development, piercings, puberty, skin and teeth. This is a great resource for teens confused and scared about what is happening to their bodies. Each page includes a detailed description of the topic and then some Q&A of the common questions teens ask about these issues.
