Sexuality

Dude You're Gay

This is a book about masculinity and sexuality in high school boys and a little information on high school girls. It is the stereotype that boys try to follow about being masculine that is affecting how they treat others and themselves during their high school years. Boys do not want to be perceived as a "fag", according to the book, so they try to prove how masculine they are. Gender identity is a big thing for high school students, some are confused and do not know where they stand, others try to prove they are something so that they can avoid the harsh names used. I believe that it is important to recognize students who display this kind of behavior because it is not healthy to the student or the environment they are in. There is also a google ebook copy of this book that can be found online.

Sex in School

This is an older article dealing with students having sex in school. Teachers and other educator professionals are appalled at the thought of students doing sexual acts in schools but students are not really caring. Some believe that there is a rebellious feeling to having sex while at school. Many of the students who comment in the article say that other students doing sexual things at school is quite common. Teachers should be aware of any place in the school a student could have sex and constantly be patrolling. This behavior is not appropriate and will leave a bad image on the school and possibly influence other students to take part in the "experience".

Sex, etc

This is a sex website for teens written by teens. Many teens, even though they take a sex ed class, are still confused and embarrassed to talk about sex. For these teens to have a site where their questions can be answered by others who relate to them is amazing. There is no sugar coating on this website, everything is straight forward. Teens are going to have sex even if parents/adults try to prevent it. It is good that they can have a website where they can learn more about being safe and finding the answers to any important questions they may have.

Gender Identity

This is an article by  and about Gender Identity and the language used on social networks by teens.

"This study examines issues of online identity and language use among male and female teenagers who created and maintained weblogs, personal journals made publicly accessible on the World Wide Web. Online identity and language use were examined in terms of the disclosure of personal information, sexual identity, emotive features, and semantic themes. Male and female teenagers presented themselves similarly in their blogs, often revealing personal information such as their real names, ages, and locations. Males more so than females used emoticons, employed an active and resolute style of language, and were more likely to present themselves as gay. The results suggest that teenagers stay closer to reality in their online expressions of self than has previously been suggested, and that these explorations involve issues, such as learning about their sexuality, that commonly occur during the adolescent years."

Teachers need to be aware of issues like this since social networks are the center point for many things relating to a student. Every kid has a facebook and is always on it. With a trend of people on social networks, teachers also need to know how this is going to affect their students and how they act in classrooms.
