Parent Student Meeting Goal Form:
One thing that I created that worked very well for me and my students, was a form that went by subject
that the students would fill out during a parent student led meeting. The form went through many renovations, but
the construction is that it is no more than one page in length, consisted of every subject, electives and personal
subjects that a student could speak about authoritatively via a small prompt. I wanted to make a student-led
meeting go easier for the student and for them to talk about their learning from a position of ownership. I have
never had to and do not plan to have a meeting where I scold a student for their shortcomings. What I want them to
do is own their behavior and their role in their education.
One of my students said that “having the prompt in place for him during the meetings made it much easier for him to not
get lost when discussing things." It also "made him think about things that he meant to ask, so that after he was done talking
about a subject he could then remember to ask his question that he had about an assignment or class activity coming up."
The Second part of the form found on the back, goes into detail about not only setting a goal but also keeping it.
For example, the student will pick a goal, and then make realistic steps to keep it including, setting supports with people
surrounding the student which could include the teacher, a family member, a friend. In the case of the previous student that I
mentioned, he picked math mastery of a subject and he chose time as his gauge of mastery. Meaning, if it became quicker for him
to get from one assignment to another in a given unit of study, he reasoned that it must be getting easier, so he must be learning the
content. The result was, he was spending less time working on math once he understood how something worked. When he started a new
unit for the first week or so, it got harder again, and he would devout more time twoards math again. By using the form and tracking
results we were able to gauge his success in reaching his goal for not only math mastery but also for time management which he needed
to meet his goal.
Admin Statement on what you do well:
"Mr. Bunch looks like you have been doing this for a long time. I really like that the meetings are “student run”. Makes them much
more meaningful and you have more student buy in on the importance of what they are doing.
You are supportive and professional.." - Principal Lee
