General Information

Parent Teacher Relationship

We believe that good parent- teacher relationships are vital to having a successful school year.  Good relationships are built through good communication, participation and listening to parent, child and teacher concerns.  We will communicate through weekly letters sent home in the Friday folders, emails, updates on our class website, special notes, telephone calls if necessary, parent-teacher conferences and report cards.  Kindergarten report cards are by semester and will be sent home in January and May.  We do not send home report cards for the first and third quarter, but we will send home progress reports in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters if necessary.  We will have our first parent- teacher conferences in October and we are available to meet with you at other times if necessary.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or comments.  The best way to get in touch with me is by email: slynch@olls.org .  We will reply to emails within 24 hours.

School Attendance

Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is very important to their learning.  Most kindergarten learning activities involve group interaction, listening to classroom instruction and completing tasks with other students.  Therefore, some work cannot be made up at home.  Please make every effort to get your child to school on time, by 8:00 am.

Sick

If your child is sick, please keep him/her at home until any fever is gone.  The handbook says that children are NOT to come to school until they have been fever free WITHOUT medication for 24 hours.  When your child returns to school please send us a note explaining their absence, and letting us know what illness they had.  Any work missed can be made up after children return to school.

Parent Participation

There are several school and classroom activities and events through the year.  Our classroom room-parent(s) will contact you about helping out with these.  Parent Participation also includes sending in items for the classroom such as holiday treats and classroom supplies.  Any items sent to school can be recorded on the volunteer commitment time sheet.  Volunteer commitment hours can also be recorded on Renweb.  Thank you so much for all your time and donations throughout the year – we really appreciate it!.

Lunch

Kindergarten has lunch every day in the cafeteria. Please provide a lunch and drink with your child every day (either from home or through our lunch programs).  Information about our milk and water program (available every day) the hot lunch program (available Tuesdays and Thursdays) and the Booster Club lunch program (every Wednesday) is available from the front office and online, through Renweb.  We do NOT have lunch on half days.

Snacks

Snack time is in the afternoon, and last about 15 minutes.  Please send in a snack for your child every day including half days.  We prefer that the children bring in healthy snacks like fruit, vegetables, cheese sticks, crackers.  Please do not send in lots of sugary snacks - it makes learning more difficult for them.  We provide water so there’s no need to send in a drink.

Outdoor Recess

The children go outside to recess every day after lunch.  The children will have indoor recess only on days when the weather is inclement: raining, excessively hot or cold.  Please send in appropriate outer wear for them so they are comfortable with the day’s weather conditions.

Rest mats

The children love having their very own rest mat.  We provide these to each student.  The rest mats are used daily during our rest time.  The rest mats are sent home every Friday to be washed.  Please have your child return the rest mat to school each Monday.  During rest time, the children listen to soft music and close their eyes (or sleep) to rest.  Personal stuffed animals and or toys are not permitted in school.

Transportation

If you plan to have your child do something different than their normal dismissal procedure please send in a written note or email.  Please do not rely on your child to tell us this information.  If NO note is received, then your child will be dismissed by his/her usual carpool method – carpool or LEAP.

Labels

Please label everything with your child’s name.  This is especially important for coats, sweatshirts, lunchboxes, backpacks.  It is very difficult and sometimes impossible to return items to children without a name on the item.  We truly appreciate your help with this; as it makes finding lost items so much easier.

Birthdays

Our children love to celebrate their birthdays!  We celebrate birthdays in the classroom throughout the year.  For those children who have summer birthdays we will celebrate their half birthdays.  If your child would like to send in a healthy treat to celebrate his/her birthday, please send in enough for everyone in our class. It makes it much easier if you send in something that has already been cut or is in individual servings for example cupcakes instead of a whole cake.  We suggest healthy treats such as granola bars, fruit, individual ice cream cups, etc..  We will serve the children water with their snacks, so no need to send in a drink. We also do not let the children eat both the birthday snack and their own snack from home on the same day so on birthdays the children will bring home their snack.

Star Student of the week

Throughout the school year, we will recognize each student as the star of the week.  Each student will be assigned a week and be given a poster to complete.  They can also bring in two items that are special to them.  They will get to explain their poster and their items to the class.
