About Me

Hi there!

My name is Carly Karas, and I am your teacher.  You can call me Miss Karas (pronounced "care-us") or Miss K.  You will find me at BayHigh School (my alma mater) in Panama City, Florida, where I teach Biology, and whatever else they need me to teach that year.  In the past, that has included Physical Science, Anatomy and Physiology and English III.  I also sponsor SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) and work with Project Graduation.

I am a teacher by trade, and a biologist by trade and education.  I have a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from the University of West Florida, where I had the honor to learn from and work with leaders in their respective fields (here is a complete list of UWF Science faculty).  While pursuing my degree, I volunteered with the St. Andrews Bay Resource Management Association, presented at Gulf Coast State College STEM camps, designed a two-week summer program for Girls Inc., of Bay County, and spent hundreds of hours in K-12 classrooms for outreach and as a substitute teacher.  After completing my degree, I taught at Crestview High School, substituted for Okaloosa County, and worked with Living Exhibits as a Marine Animal Husbandry Specialist.  While at Bay High, I have also worked at local Florida State University (FSU) STEM camps, tutored with Tutor Doctor, and worked with FSU's Mike Zinszer and three other Bay County Teachers developing special curriculum for our high schools.

In my off time, I am a total nerd.  I love playing video games on my PC and Nintendo 3DS, playing Pathfinder and other role-playing games with my friends, watching a lot of different TV shows, or going to Friday Night Magic tournaments.  I also take some time to run 5K races, and dive our local dive sites.  During breaks, I read a lot of books from a wide variety of genres.  Finally, I try to make time to travel in the States and throughout the world, including Costa Rica and Australia.

I am most excited to learn about you!  As we traverse the next school year together, we will learn a lot about each other.  And know that your success, your growth, and your education is my top priority.  By the end of the year with me, you will learn about yourself, you will learn life skills, and you will learn Biology (or, whatever class I have you for cheeky)!
