Foundations

We have split classes depending on how fast students are learning and applying their spelling rules. Currently all three classes are one unit 4. Currently my spelling class is reviewing spelling rules that seemed challenging through out the chapter. We will be taking our test on Thursday. Unit four focuses on the adding of suffixes to baseboards. Examples of suffixes we learned are: ing, es, s, est, er, and ed.  We focused on how the suffix ed makes different sounds such as /t/, /ed/, /id/, and /d/. Some of the other classes will be spending some more time on Unit 4 and others will be moving onto Unit 5.

Reading

We finished up our unit on weather and have started our unit on inventions and entrepreneur. We are focusing on how inventors take chances, make mistakes, and sometimes succeed big. We have read several texts to support our main topic and have learned different reading strategies that can be applied to any book read. Below are book titles we have been reading/ will be reading to help us get to our end goal of a project. The students will be making a culminating project where they will do a research project on different inventions and how they have changed through out  time. We will be doing a practice project to help the students to prepare for their individual projects.

1. The Most Magnificent Thing- This story is about a little girl who wants to make the most "magnificent thing". She has trials and errors and she becomes very angry from all of the mistakes that culminate. After a melt down she is able to look at all of her mistakes and finds something perfect in all of her mistakes. She calms down and makes the most magnificent thing. We referred back to this book several times already through out the unit and we will continue to refer back as a starting point.

2. What Does It Mean to Be An Entrepreneur- This text is an introduction to what it means to become and entrepreneur. The first day we read this book we focused on authors purpose and if the author was trying to inform us, entertain us, or persuade us. On the second day we focused on the vocabulary in the story. The important words we picked to focus on were characteristics about entrepreneurs. We did different activities to discover/ apply the definitions.

3. Alexander Graham Bell: Inventor of the Telephone- We will be reading this story to jump start our class invention project on the telephone. The first read we looked for key details to support our discovery about the telephone. On our second read we will revise the book to revisit with vocabulary that will be challenging but will go along with the project.

4. So You Want To Be an Inventor- This story is about a variety of inventors and their successes and failures.

5. How Ben Franklin Stole The Lightning- This story is about all the inventions that Ben Franklin has made and how he caught lightening to make his most important invention. While reading we focused on how good readers ask questions while they read. We modeled some questions together as a class and then the students were able to practice writing down questions in their notebooks.

6. Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade- This was a special book we read to celebrate Thanksgiving and learn about how the balloons were introduced to the parade.

We will continue to read more about inventions and inventors as the month continues.

  • Solve one and two step word problems within 100 using strategies based on place value
  • Use manipulative to represent the composition of 10 ones and 1 ten with two digit addends
  • Relate addition using manipulative to written vertical method
  • Use math drawings to represent the composition and relate drawings to a written method
  • Use math drawings to represent the composition when adding a two digit to a three digit addend
  • Use math drawings to represent the composition when adding, a two digit to a three digit addend
  • Represent subtraction with and without the decomposition of 1 ten as 10 ones with manipulatives
