Michael J. Smith is a graduate of Hendrix College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and a graduate of The University of Memphis with a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching Economics and History. He has taught in the Shelby County Schools system for 16 years. Prior to teaching, he owned retail businesses, managed airport operations in Memphis, Dayton, and Cincinnati, and worked as a consultant for UNIVERSITY CONSULTING.
He was born and raised in Danville, Arkansas, and lived there until entering college. He was a four-sport athlete, a straight-A student, and the recipient of the Danforth Award. He attended Hendrix College on an academic/athletic scholarship (football).
