Melissa Smith's Reading and ESOL website resources

Dear Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to let you know how much I have enjoyed working with your child.  Each child is unique and brought something special to our class.   A few parents asked if I could provide some parent resources if their children were not in Reading or Language Arts connections next nine weeks.  I have made these PowerPoints so that your students can continue to practice reading strategies like Latin at home.

I have attached the Latin slideshows I have made.  They should focus on one slide a week and then go back and review all words over the weekend before moving on.  I did not include worksheets with definitions due to copyright, so the students will need to look up the definitions themselves. The slide shows give meanings for prefixes, roots, and suffixes.  It also provides picture clues.  You can also print the slideshows for students to do matching with pictures, or to write sentences, etc.

There are also examples of graphic organizers and some reading websites you may find helpful.  Please look over the websites yourself and let your child know which ones you would like them to work with. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Sincerely,

Melissa Smith

P.S. Latin information came from The Critical Thinking Co.  A1 Word Roots: Learning the Building Blocks of Better Spelling and Vocabulary   By Cherie Blanchard.  If you are interested in buying this book, there are four levels in all.  The company is also now selling it in a CD which includes interactive computer activities.  You can find more information on this at www.CriticalThinking.com.  This company has wonderful learning resources.
