Book of the Week

Where the Red Fern Grows

by Wilson Rawls

If you love animals and want to read a heartwarming, inspirational story about a boy's love for his dogs, this is the book for you.  Where the Red Fern Grows is my all time favorite.  Set in the midwest in the 1940's, this book exemplifies the qualities we want to develop in our children - perserverance, compassion, determination, love of family and love of nature.  It is a great read aloud, especially because some of the content regarding life in the 1940's and the necessity of hunting will need an explanation for your fourth grader.  Get out your tissues for the ending.  It is sure to touch your heart.
