Letter to Parents

August 2008

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This is going to be a fantastic year for all of us!

We have a great group of teachers who are eager to teach your child everything needed for third grade. We have so many third graders we are adding a new teacher, Mrs. Hodges.

Two summers ago I made Take Home Book Bags that I think you and your child will enjoy.  They will check them out on Mondays and return them on Fridays.  Please make sure everything is returned to school in good shape for the next student to check out.  Those students who do not return the Book Bags on time, will not be allowed to check a Book Bag the following week.  More information on that later.

You will hear your child mention Smart Boxes.  These are plastic containers that have a theme for them to learn about.  There are books to read, writing, activities, and challenges.  We do these each day for 30-45 minutes.  It is part of their reading cycle.  The first six weeks they will complete Work Stations.

I want to encourage you to make sure your child reads 20-30 minutes every night.  It can be any book you have or one checked out from the library.  The students are permitted to go to the library several times a day to check out books.

There will be spelling and math homework each night.  Math homework will usually be in a workbook, but may occasionally be a worksheet or project.  Spelling homework is a tic tac toe page with choices on what the child must do.  This spelling homework is due on Friday.  The spelling words are in the Take Home Folder.  I give a practice spelling test on Thursday and if your child makes 100%, then they may do other things during the Friday spelling test.

The TAKS test is very stressful for everyone.  The reading part must be passed in order to continue on to fourth grade.  I will teach them all the reading strategies they will need to pass the test.  But if we work together, it will greatly enhance your child's learning experience.

Here on my teacher website you should be able to find answers to most of your questions.  If not, feel free to call me at school (281-457-3080).   My conference time is from 9:15 - 10:00.
