My name is Patti. Rosen. I have been a classroom teacher for 16 years. This past June, I was laid-off from my job as a 5th grade teacher with LAUSD. Why was I laid off? Everyone who had been teaching in the district two years or less received a lay-off notice. 2000 teachers were laid-off! Although I started with LAUSD in 1987, I resigned in 1996 (on excellent terms) to be a full-time mommy. When I returned to the classroom in 2002, I taught at a charter school. The district does not take any of these years into account. They only care about my new seniority date: the day I was rehired by LAUSD, August 1, 2007. I am currently working part-time as a substitute teacher, hoping that some day soon I will get rehired as a classroom teacher.
What do I miss most about being a teacher? I miss having a class to call my own, developing relationships with students and their parents, planning exciting lessons, teaching and challenging students, and working as part of a team to help every child be successful and feel valued.
