January 6-10 & 13-17, 2014

Reading and Writing

*read Tacky the Penguin and reviewed cause and effect

*reading levels and DIBELS scores were reassessed

*discussed and wrote our new year’s resolutions, or personal promises, for 2014

*created an Editor's Checklist to use on our writing (date, capital letters, punctuation, detail words)


*introduced two digit subtraction with borrowing 

*use this poem to help with double digit subtraction, looking at the one's place:

"More on top? Don't stop!

More on the floor? Go next door and get ten more!"

*practiced our single digit subtraction facts to make double digit subtraction go faster (so we don't stop and think about every step)



*began our weather unit

*drew current weather conditions and noted details which depict the seasons

*observed the Key School Weather Station

*learned about the water cycle (precipitation, evaporation, condensation)

*made "Clouds in a Bottle" with a 2 liter container, hot water, and ice to illustrate condensation



*No school Monday, January 20, in observance of MLK, Jr. Day.

* Half-day Friday, January 24 for Records Keeping Day.

*A deep and heartfelt "Thank you!" again, for the thoughtful holiday gift!

*Please note that Word Work words will now be tested on a weekly basis, coming home on Fridays and tested the following Friday (or end of the week).
