Pre-Algebra (8th Grade Math)

I will be using Acellus in my classes this year.  I believe this program is going to be an amazing program for my students! They will be using their Chromebooks or computers to do their lessons. Students this year may opt to do virtual learning thru me for their math, humanities, and art classes, or they may do in-class studies. You need to let the school know ASAP if you intend to do the virtual learning path.  This is a self-paced course. On Fridays, each student will have an enrichment exercise to complete for extra credit. Your work for the week will also be due on Fridays If you are doing the virtual/distance learning your work for the week will be due on Fridays. I am going to have to supplement the math with lessons from Khan Academy to make sure all standards have been met. You will be given a link to that thru Special Assignments. We will have orientation on this course the first week for the students. The lessons listed below are not complete and will be added to as needed.

Lesson 2: Scientific Notation

OAS: PA.N.1.2 Express and compare approximations of very large and very small numbers using scientific notation. PA.N.1.3. Multiply and divide numbers expressed in scientific notation, express the answer in scientific notation.

Key Understandings:

   •     Students must come to the realization that scientific notation is a way to write very large or very small numbers in a readable manner developed by scientists.

   •     Students will develop the understanding that the number is written with a coefficient between 1 and 10 and multiplied by a power of ten;

   •     Students will be able to convert from scientific notation to standard form by interpreting the power of ten being multiplied by the coefficient;

   •     Ensure students can convert from standard form to scientific notation 

   •     Be able to multiply and divide numbers that are written in scientific notation. Be able to put the answer in proper scientific notation;

   •     Recognize scientific notation when it appears on calculator displays. Ex. If a calculator displays 3.145E4 it needs to be written as 3.145 x 104 in scientific notation.

OAS: PA.N.1.4 Classify real numbers as rational or irrational. Explain why the rational number system is closed under addition and multiplication and why the irrational system is not. Explain why the sum of a rational number and an irrational number is irrational; and the product of a non-zero rational number and an irrational number is irrational.

Key Understandings:

   •     Classify numbers as rational or irrational;

   •     Locate rational and irrational number on a number line;

   •     Estimate the value of irrational numbers;

   •     Understand that adding or multiplying a rational number by an irrational number will create an irrational numbers and adding an irrational number by an irrational number will create and irrational number and adding only rational numbers will result in a rational sum.

   •     Understand that adding opposite irrational numbers will result in the sum of zero which is rational (Ex. -2+2 = 0).
