What is Student Service-Learning? Student Service-Learning is a form of project based learning. It is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between service and their learning.
Maryland State Requirement
The Maryland State Board of Education passed a mandate in 1992 which requires all Maryland public school students to complete a program of service learning as a graduate requirement.
There are Seven Best Practices for a successful student service-learning project:
· Meets a Recognized Need in the Community
· Achieve Curricular Objectives through Student Service-Learning
· Reflection throughout Student Service-Learning Experience
· Develop Student Responsibility
· Establish Community Partnerships
· Plan ahead for Student Service-Learning
· Equip Students with Knowledge and Skills Needed for Service
Each of these is an essential part of the student service-learning experience.
