Fitness and Wellness

Prerequisite: None

In this introductory high school course, 9th graders spend the first semester focusing on the Teaching Games for Understanding model, which teaches game fundamentals in four areas: target games, net/wall games, striking and fielding games and invasion/territory games. Students perform and analyze a variety of traditional and student-developed games in these areas. The second semester focuses on fitness-enhancing physical education and health concepts such as weight training, swimming, jogging, using personal heart rate monitor and other lifetime sports activities such as wall climbing. Health concepts include identifying fitness activities and developing a personal fitness/dietary plan, the effects of exercise and substance use, and sexuality and STDs (HIV/AIDS etc).
