ASSIGNMENT 1: Magic Flowers Chemical Explanation

THIS ASSIGNMENT SHOULD WRITTEN IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.

We have been investigating the flowers for a week and a half, with various observations, hypotheses, experiments and discussions.  It is now time for you to explain what has happened!

Using the same format we did on the first day, draw out three boxes.  In the first, include a diagram of how the flowers started.  In the second, what happened initially after being sprayed, and in the third, how the flowers ended.  Draw arrows between the boxes.  Labels are good - use them!  Then write an explanation. 

In your explanation, include what exactly made the flowers turn pink and then turn white again.  Every student must use the following terms somewhere in their explanation and/or diagrams.  there are other terms that may be helpful, but these are the minimum:   

  • phenolphthalein
  • ammonia
  • pH or acid or base or indicator (may use all, but must use at least one)
  • carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • water
  • carbonic acid

This assignment is DUE MONDAY 9/21/15 IN YOUR NOTEBOOK

ASSIGNMENT 2: The Nature of Science Summary

THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE WRITTEN ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER TO TURN IN.  NOT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!!

In today's journal (9/18/15) we discussed how science flows and how science is done.  All year so far, chemistry students have been engaging in the process of science.  For this assignment, you have a choice.  To answer, you may choose to do either a one-page essay (preferably typed) OR a full page diagram (this can have color, be creative, but must be as content-rich as the essay would be).

Here is the subject for your essay or poster/diagram:   How does science work?  What is the "scientific process" like?  Describe how you have "done science" through our work with the flowers.  Include yourself and specific examples from the class activities in your response.

This assignment is DUE NO LATER THAN TUESDAY 9/22/15 ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER TO TURN IN.
