CM1 Chemistry Extra Credit

End of CM1 CHEMISTRY EXTRA CREDIT    Up to 15 points possible

This assignment is open to any chemistry student in Ms. LaSovage’s class.  Points earned on this assignment can be used to make up for points lost on a previous assignment.  Quality, accuracy and completeness of work will determine how many points are earned.

CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OPTIONS TO COMPLETE.

This is due no later than: _____________________________

Option 1:  Sig Figs    This should be written on a separate sheet to turn in.

COMPLETE ALL 6 PARTS ACCURATELY TO EARN ALL POSSIBLE POINTS.

  1. RESEARCH:

Research what “significant figures” are as they relate to chemistry.  (AKA “sig figs” or “significant digits”)

  1. INTEGRATE

In your own words, describe what is meant by the term “significant figures.”

  1. COMPARE

Find at least one video about significant figures online and watch it.EMAIL ME THE LINK TO THE VIDEO YOU WATCHED.Note: Khan Academy probably has a video on this.

  1. PROCESS

Write or paraphrase the significant figures rules (that is, write down how to tell what digits are significant and what to do with quotients and products, etc.)

  1. IDENTIFY

Give an example of a number and identify its significant digits. This can be your own example or one from the video or research above.

  1. APPLY!

Go back to our team lab from the centimeters and inches lab. Many teams had similar numbers, but they often varied in how many decimals they used in their answer.Using what you learned about significant digits, explain how many digits should be in an answer in last week’s lab, and why.

Option 2:  Comparing Investigations       This should be constructed on a separate sheet to turn in.

USE ALL TERMS ACCURATELY TO EARN ALL POSSIBLE POINTS.

We have done two major lab activities this year: the “Magic Flowers” activities and the “Centimeters to Inches” lab.  The two labs were different from one another in a number of ways.  However both used valid scientific processes.  For this option, you are to do a formal comparison of what students had to do and skills/mental processes they had to use when completing each of the labs.  Your product can be an essay, but I would prefer a visual representation, perhaps a Venn diagram or a poster displaying some other diagram…As guidance, you will need to incorporate the ideas from the list below.  (Please underline each term once so I can find it if you use an essay format.)  Note: You must use these words in sentences or with descriptions, not just the words by themselves.  Explain yourself – communicate with the reader of your work!

Here are the words/ideas that should be included in your analysis.  Look them up if you are not familiar with them:

  1. Precision
  2. Accuracy
  3. Multiple trials
  4. Hypotheses
  5. Test/Experiment
  6. Question
  7. Observation
  8. Quantitative
  9. Qualitative
  10. Creativity
  11. Recording data
  12. Communication

Note: If you weren’t here for the Magic Flowers Lab, you should not choose this extra credit option.  Choose Option 1.
