Kindergarten: Journal writing is off to a great start. We copy the first few words and then invent the spelling to complete the sentence. We will continue to work with word families. We began our word building before the break and we will continue with that. Watch for phonetic spelling of words. This is the first step in the writing process. Please continue to work on all the high frequency words we've covered. We will be introduced to new ones beginning this week.
First Grade: We will read our next story, Drake's Tail. This story is a folktale about two friends who are learning to build a relationship with each other. The grammar focus this week is on the verbs was and were. We will continue with our 2 sentence journal writing focusing on January topics.
Both classes will also be doing a unit on Aesop's Fables. We will be reading several fables this month. Each one will have a follow up that discusses the literary elements of a story...who, what, when, where, and sequencing the story.
Kindergarten: We will finish working in Chapter 9. This chapter focuses on compaing numbers to 10. It will address one more, one less, and identifying the set that has more/fewer. Our next chapter is numbers to 20.
First Grade: We will continue working in Chaper 7. This chapter focuses on common shapes. We will review the four basic shapes: circle, triangle, square, and rectangle. We will also review three-dimensional models of cubes, rectangular and triangular prisms, cylinders, cones, and pyramids. Magic Math will continue as well.
Kindergarten: Our new unit will focus on Weather. In this unit, we will learn about different kinds of weather, weather patterns, seasons, and severe weather.
First Grade: Our new unit will focus on Sky and Earth. In this unit, we will learn about the sun, the moon, and the stars. We will learn what causes day and night and moon phases. Finally, we will explain why days have different lengths during different seasons.
Kindergarten: We will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. and what his dream for us was.
