Reading Logs

Reading Logs

Students will have the responsibility to read for at least 20 minutes each night.  They may read a book of their choice but the book needs to be at an appropriate reading level.  Students will learn how to choose “good fit” books and I will be able to provide assistance in helping to choose a great book.

Your child will have a reading log inside their homework folder where he/she will record what is read each night and how long they read (at least 20 minutes). Each week students will complete a “Response to Reading” activity before, during, or after reading (depending on the activity). These responses will be kept in their homework folder/notebook.

Each child will be assigned a day each week to turn in their homework folders and reading logs to be graded/checked.  This list will be provided in class. Because they only turn in homework logs once a week they have 7 days to complete 5 reading assignments.  Please help your child to get into the routine of this each night!

Why does my child have to read 5 days a week?

  Practice makes perfect!

A child who reads 4 days a week for 20 minutes will read 720 minutes less in a school year, than someone who reads 5 nights a week for 20 minutes!
