Welcome to kindergarten

At the beginning of this year, the students and I read Oh, the Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss.  It is a wonderful book for children who are beginning a new adventure.  We discussed the book and decided on some personal goals for the year.  The students set their own goals and refer to them on various occasions during the school year.  I know that they will be able to achieve every goal that they set for themselves with guidance from the parents and teacher.

I encourage students’ questions, answers (right or wrong), and ideas. I believe that students will decide which information is important to them and will use this information to reach a higher level of cognition.  The information they learn adds to or replaces prior knowledge.  My role as the teacher is to provide appropriate and significant material needed for them to reach this new level of understanding.

The atmosphere in my classroom stimulates questioning about their environment and their knowledge.  In addition, my classroom environment encourages critical thinking and problem solving.  By respecting a student’s ideas and by encouraging a higher level of thinking, I help the students take responsibility for their own learning, which in turn makes learning more useful, meaningful, and fun.

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.
