Stadia is Shutting Down, Users Losing Access to Games

The Google Stadia streaming service is closing down permanently, and while users will receive refunds for their purchases, they will lose access to their games. The writing on the wall for Google Stadia has been there for some time, with speculations surfacing a few months ago that the service will be shutting down. These accusations were refuted by the official Stadia social media, but it is now confirmed.

The bad news is that Google Stadia users will lose access to the games and downloadable content (DLC) they've paid through the service or received through the free games program. The good news is that Google will refund Stadia users for all Google Store purchases, with the majority of refunds scheduled to be finalized by the middle of January 2023. That date will coincide with the shutdown of the service, since Google has stated Stadia would be shut down on January 18, 2023.

Google will continue to use the Stadia technology, which will be integrated across YouTube, Google Play, and augmented reality projects. Google also intends to make the Stadia platform accessible to other gaming businesses. Many Google employees who worked on the Stadia team will be transferred to other divisions.

Google Stadia Shut Down Date

Google is shutting down Stadia in January 2023!

Google Stadia launched with a strong lineup of well-liked multi-platform games like Destiny 2, Mortal Kombat 11, Red Dead Redemption 2, and others. The exclusive survival-horror game GYLT was also one of the launch games for Stadia. It is a more family-friendly take on the survival-horror genre. When it came out, GYLT got mixed reviews, but there may still be people who want to check it out. Even though Stadia is no longer running, there have been no announcements about GYLT coming to other platforms as of the time this article was written.

It's great that Google is giving back money to gamers for the Stadia hardware and software they bought, but some may still be upset about not being able to play their games. It's a sad reminder of what can go wrong with online games. There's always a chance that these companies could shut down their online services, which would mean that gamers would lose access to their game libraries.

Google plans to issue refunds for Stadia gear bought via the official Google Store. This includes anything you purchase from the Google Stadia store, including games and DLC. Google also provides additional details about the reimbursement process in a note to its fans.

Google Stadia Refunds

All Stadia hardware (Stadia Controller, Founders Edition, Premiere Edition, and Play and Watch with Google TV packages) purchased through the Google Store and all Stadia software (games and add-on purchases) purchased from the Stadia store will be refunded. While you can't get a refund for your Stadia Pro subscription, you can keep playing games on the Pro tier until the service is shut down entirely.

While we define the procedure for each country and circumstance, we will be updating this post to reflect our progress. By January 18, 2023, we hope to have returned most refunds to the original payment method.

Google has also stated that Stadia Pro subscriptions are non-refundable. Those who had a Stadia Pro subscription on September 29, 2022, however, will not lose access to their Pro library or any other subscription benefits during the shutdown.

The existing Google Stadia service is scheduled to be discontinued, and the firm will likely announce further details about the shutdown process in the following months.
