WEEKLY NOTE FROM THE TEACHER

Weekly Note from the Teacher - - Week of Oct. 31 - Nov. 4

Thank you for all your help with the Harvest Party last week. Last Friday was a busy day so there wasn't a Friday letter.

Math -- Multiplication unit.  We are going to memorize 6 multiplication facts each week.  8x3=24, 7x6=42, 6x4=24, 2x9=18, 5x7=35, 9x6=54 are the multiplication facts that need to be memorized by Friday, November 18th. Start practicing your facts at multiplication.com - go to games.  We have been practicing our multiplication facts using flashcards and multiplication.com

Science -  Sound, light, electricity, magnets and heat will be the next unit.

Social Studies - We learned about the 4 hemispheres and longitude and latitude.

Library - please remind your child to bring their library books to school EVERY Thursday.

Reading - Oral presentations were Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week.  Students did a great job with their state reports.  Our next unit will be Realistic/Historical Fiction.  We will be working on summarizing text, drawing inferences, and studying the characters and settings of a story while reading realistic/historical fiction. This unit will last until Winter Break.

Words Their Way - The sort this week was with words that have the /er/ sound, but spelled er, ir or ur. There were 2 oddballs that do not make the /er/ sound.

Typing - Type to Learn -  Students need to learn to sit up when typing and put their hands on the home row.  Most are doing better at this.  By December they should be able to find the keys without looking at the keyboard.  I have keyboard covers that cover up the letters.  There is a fun typing game on the internet the students can use to practice typing at home.  My daughter loves playing this game.  http://www.freetypinggame.net - just go to the tab that says games when you get to the sight.

AR points - 2nd quarter - 8 points will need to be earned, but students will need to read books at a 3.0 grade level and higher unless I give permission otherwise.  AR tests that are taken at a grade level below 3.0 will be deleted and not count towards the 8 points.  Some students are reading 1st and 2nd grade level books lately to earn their points.  The AR Party will be Wednesday for those students that have earned their 8 points for 1st quarter.

Students are learning the PRIDE acronym. Everyday students should follow the PRIDE standards.  Those students who go above and beyond the PRIDE standards will be recognized for their outstanding choices. - Once a month students will recognized for going above and beyond these standards.  PREPARE, RESPECT, INTEGRITY, DEPENDABILITY, ENVIRONMENT.  The Pride Assembly for November will be Wednesday, November 9th at 1:50 pm on the North side bleachers in the gym.

*Monday, November 7th & Tuesday, November 8th - 12:30 Dismissal - Parent Teacher Conferences 2-8 pm. {Reminder Thursday's parent teacher conferences were moved to Monday, November 7th at the same time - if this time DOES NOT work please contact Christine Bear to reschedule at 641-347-8774 - thank you}.  Parent Teacher conferences are student involved at the elementary level.  Students must attend the conference.
