What is Digital Citizenship?

According to "Applied Educational Systems", digital citizenship "refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level." The number may vaery across different sources, but digital citizenship is generally explained in 9 elements:

  • Commerce
  • Communication
  • Etiquette (Netiquette)
  • Literacy
  • Health & Welfare
  • Law
  • Rights & Responsibility 
  • Security 

As the digital world becomes a more complicated and intricate place for both students and educators, it is important that educators become familiar with the components of digital citizenship and what it means to be a good digital citizen in order to navigate the ever growing and evolving digital world.
