Course Description:

This one-year course will focus on developing and strengthening students’ writing, reading, listening, speaking and critical thinking skills.  Instructional practices will draw upon diversity awareness to increase appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. 

 

Course Goals:

  • We will comprehend, build, and extend vocabulary.
  • We will apply reading process skills and strategies to build our comprehension of texts.
  • We will develop our expository writing in preparation for the state writing proficiency exam.
  • We will be able to document and cite sources when writing a research paper.
  • We will apply speaking and listening skills for effective communication. 
  • We will develop and apply study skills and learning behaviors.

 

Grading:  Quarter grades will be compiled from a variety of assignments, which will be weighed as follows:

 

                        Class Work and Home Work:             50%

                        Tests and Quizzes:                              40%

                        Participation and Projects:                  10%

                       

 

Semester grades will be determined by combining and averaging the two quarters covered and the semester exam.  Each quarter will be worth 45% of the total grade while the semester exam will be worth 10% of the final grade.

 

Please refer to page 7 of the Student Agenda for information on make-up and re-do policies.

 

Teachers are available for additional assistance before and after school upon appointment.

A—4.0                        B—3.0                        C—2.0                        D—1.0                        F—0.0

Materials for Class:  Students will need the following the materials for this class:

  • One spiral or composition-style notebook for class notes
  • One spiral or composition-style notebook for cross-curricular writing
  • One folder or 3-ring binder
  • Plenty of loose leaf paper
  • Pencils
  • Pen (standard blue or black ink)

                       

 

Classroom Behavior Expectations:

Standards of Saville are Success, Quality, Responsibility, Respect, and Reflection.

 

In class, students are expected to:

  • Be Prompt
  • Be Prepared
  • Be Polite
  • Be Productive
  • Be Nourished.  Food or drink (other than bottled water) is prohibited from the room.
  • Be Attentive.  Electronic devices (phones, iPods, etc) are not to be used in class.

Parent Communication:

Parents access their student’s grades and attendance via ParentLink, a web-based program that is available through the Saville website or http://ParentLink.ccsd.net. A parent designated computer is located in the Registrar Office at Saville for use at any time.  Parents may also access grades by calling 799-4433 and following automated directions.  Grades are updated on a weekly basis, and are available for parental viewing by the end of the day on Thursday.

  • We will comprehend, build, and extend vocabulary.
  • We will apply reading process skills and strategies to build our comprehension of texts.
  • We will apply the five stages of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing), and use them to write a variety of texts that are appropriate to audience.
  • We will develop our expository writing in preparation for the state writing proficiency exam.
  • We will be able to document and cite sources when writing a research paper.
  • We will apply speaking and listening skills for effective communication. 
  • We will develop and apply study skills and learning behaviors.
