1st Semester Exam Review-Chemistry

Review for the Nomenclature Semester Exam-Chemistry 2018-19

Before you begin this tutorial, create a word document and save it on the desktop (you will save it to the teacher flash drive at the end of class). Save it as firstname.lastname.chemsemrev  (and yes that is YOUR first and last name, not the words first and last name). Use earbuds or headphones for the videos-if you don’t have any then ask the teacher if you may use a laptop quietly.

1. Practice becoming more familiar with polyatomic ion names and valence electrons

https://www2.stetson.edu/mahjongchem

Polyatomic Ion Practice-at the toggle at the top by the word Game: change the toggle to Polyatomic Ions. Start a new game and match each polyatomic ion with its correct name. Take a screenshot of a completed board and paste it into the word document answer sheet that you created.

Valence Electron Practice- at the toggle at the top by the word Game: change the toggle to Valence Electrons and match each element/ion with the correct outermost ground state electronic configuration. You may use your periodic table and your journal to eliminate the tiles. Take a screenshot of a completed board and paste it into your word document answer sheet answer sheet.

2. Watch the video How to speak Chemistrian

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlRhLicNo8Q

A quick review of what we have studied-follow along with your notes and make sure they are complete, and you understand all of these naming rules. If you need to add anything to your notes (such as his table), please add it in (It goes fast but this is just a review).

à If you understand all of this video, you are prepared for the test and should move on to the practice problems below.

If there were sections of this video that you did not understand, then go through the tutorials below to tutor you further.

2a.  For Naming the Ionic and Molecular (Covalent) Compounds

Watch the video Naming Ionic and Molecular Compounds | How to Pass Chemistry pausing it where you need to complete or add to the notes in your journal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nijb6UMvZuE

If you feel that you need more practice with naming using the polyatomic ions watch the video Naming Compounds with Polyatomic Ions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPfLDdIfOVA

If you still feel unsure of your understanding, Khan Academy has a very detailed unit on naming ionic compounds-to be beneficial you must go through the whole unit (videos, readings, and practice). Copy and paste your practice results on your word document answer sheet (and save).

2b. For Naming Acids

If you feel that you need more practice with naming acids watch the video Naming Acids | How to Pass Chemistry pausing it where you need to complete or add to the notes in your journal.

3. Play the review game Naming Ionic and Molecular Compounds Game

3a.  https://www.quia.com/rr/180365.html

Reach a score of at least $128,000. Screenshot your score at the end of the game and paste into your word answer document (and save).

3b.  Take a quick self-check quiz-this is in a format very similar to the format of your final exam (just much shorter).  If you struggle with a question on this test, you should probably go back and work on the tutorial for that type of naming. Screenshot your score at the end of the quiz and paste into your word answer document (and save).

4. Play the review game Acid Naming

4a.  https://www.quia.com/hm/498413.html

Screenshot your score at the end of the quiz and paste into your word answer document (and save).

4b.  Take a quick self-check quiz. If you struggle with a question on this test, you should probably go back and work on the tutorial for that type of naming. Screenshot your score at the end of the quiz and paste into your word answer document (and save).

Be sure you have saved your properly named word answer document to the teacher flash drive before the end of the period for credit for this review.
