I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your child’s teacher. My name is Stephanie Schembri, and I am blessed with three children; Andrew who is 12, Dylan who is 10 and Ben who is 5. I am excited about starting our new school year together and look forward to building our new Grade Three family.
The first couple of weeks will be spent on activities that will allow me to assess your child’s abilities and needs for a successful school year. The first week of school, we will be reviewing Math and Language skills and establishing classroom/school routines.
Respect is an expectation for all of us in our classroom - respect for self, respect for peers, respect for the adults in the school, and respect for the gift of education. My objective during this year will be to encourage and foster each child’s self-confidence and the desire to do his or her best at all times. I will strive to create an environment where every child feels safe enough to take risks, to be themselves and to grow to their full potential in all their academic endeavours.
When you walk into our classroom, you will probably notice that it looks very different from other classrooms you’ve been in. In addition to traditional desks and chairs, you will see a wide variety of seating options, including standing tables, low tables for kneeling, crates with cushions, stability balls, stools, floor seats with lap desks, a couch and moon chairs. Students will be able to choose their own seat daily and work in a location that suits them. Each student will have his/her own basket to hold their pencil case and mailbox for their Agenda and any notes that are going home. I believe the choice, independence and responsibility fostered by flexible seating will greatly impact their growth in a positive way!
This is my third year using flexible seating and I am very excited about using it again this year. I know it might seem a little different from what you’re used to in a traditional classroom, but I believe it will help each student in our class be the best learner they can be. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to give me a call at 519-660-2773.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any questions or concerns about your child and his or her progress throughout the year, please do not hesitate to call me at the school or write me a note. It is important that we work in partnership to support your child’s development and help make this a memorable and fabulous year. I’m looking forward to meeting many of you at the Back to School Open House on Tuesday, September 17th from 5-7pm.
