Reading: As a class we completed our read aloud book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. As we were reading the book together we also wrote in our Book Report Reading Response Logs. The students and I wrote three response entries and a summary. This will count as their first book report. You should have received a note that further explains the book reports and the due dates for Book Report #2. Students should bring their independent reading book and Book Report Response log to school each day and home each evening.
Writing: Currently, we are reviewing the steps of the writing process and writing our personal narratives. Our personal narratives are telling about an important event in our lives. Mini lessons will focus on revising, conventions, and editing.
Science: As we learn the steps of the scientific method we are applying what we learn with our experiment on “dancing raisins”. We have found out what makes a raisin dance (float and then sink, float and then sink…) but our problem or question we would like answered now is how to make the raisins dance faster.Spelling: This week Theme 1 List 2 will focus on initial consonants and the test will be Friday, August 7th.
Math: We are wrapping up Topic 4 on large numbers with a test today. Tuesday will be a review day. Students will receive their graded tests, look them over to evaluate their progress, and finally ask questions about any of their problems. On Wednesday we will start Topic 3 Addition and Subtraction. Look for a study guide to come home. You will receive a copy of the study guide to keep at home and a copy that you should sign and return to school.VOLUNTEERS:Parents wishing to volunteer at school or on field trips must first attend a volunteer training session to receive a packet of information. Volunteer training sessions are held twice a year in the library (8/21/08 and 1/22/09) at 6:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend one of these times, please contact the office to schedule a date and time to receive your training. Once your paperwork and fingerprinting background check is completed and on file at your child’s school, you may begin volunteering. If you have a particular date you wish to help in the classroom or to attend a field trip, remember this process takes approximately three weeks to complete. Therefore, please allocate enough time in order to accomplish your specific request.
