Parental Engagement

This page will provide access to information and strategies that can help parents to support their child's learning and to help with revision for senior students sitting exams.

Parental engagement is a key priority in the Scottish education National Improvement Framework.

It focuses on ways in which parents, carers and families support and encourage their children’s learning in school and in everyday life.

Parental engagement represents a greater ‘commitment, ownership of action’ than parental involvement within educational settings.

While there are no universally recognised definitions in Scottish education today the term ‘parental involvement’ most often focuses on parents getting involved in the life and work of the establishment.  Please see the following document for information regarding the life of our school: Annan Academy Handbook

‘Parental engagement’ most often refers to parents’ engagement in their child’s learning at home, at school, and in the wider community. Parental engagement is supported by discussion between parents/practitioners and focuses on how families can build on what they already do to help their children’s learning and provide a supportive home learning environment.

Always remember:

  • Parents of children at high school still have influence - although your children may say that you don’t
  • Parental engagement at secondary school is more subtle and is about moral support, showing an interest and encouragement
  • Education takes place at school, but learning starts from birth and continues life-long. You don’t have a classroom at home, nor are you expected to, but your children learn a lot from you in your home environment.
