Effective Writing: Today in Class (S1)

W, 8/19: (1) Today we went over classroom expectations and policies as well as course content. (2) The Google classroom code was distributed. (3) We signed up for Remind. (4) We then discussed bell ringers and completed our first one. After, the editing rules relating to the types of errors in the bell ringer were distributed and discussed. (4) Next, the essay assignment was discussed and explained.
(5) We then started learning about our first revision technique: appositive phrases; with the remaining class time, we started working with appositive phrases.

HW:

  • Write your introductory/who you are as a writer essay. Submit as an attachment via OnCampus PRIOR TO 7 A.M. THIS Saturday (8/22).

F, 8/21: (1) We went over our BR (bell ringer) at the beginning of class. (2) Next, textbooks were distributed, and we began the unit on appositive phrases. (3) After that, we did an in-class activity on appositive phrases.

HW:

  • Write your introductory/who you are as a writer essay. Submit as an attachment via OnCampus PRIOR TO 7 A.M. THIS Saturday (8/22).
  • Complete practice set #1 in the appositive phrases unit as instructed. Bring a PRINTOUT of your complete practice set responses to class on Tuesday, our next meeting day.

 

T, 8/25: (1) We went over our BR (bell ringer) at the beginning of class. (2) Next, your introductory/who you are as a writer essays were returned with comments. (3) After that, we went over and discussed APP practice set #1. (4) We then did a bit more in-class writing using APP. (5) Then, APP practice set #2 was discussed and assigned.

HW:

  • Annotate your introductory/who you are as a writer essay by making comments directly on the copy returned during class. These comments should indicate how you intend to revise the essay based on Mr. Alig's comments and your own insights. Bring back this original printout of your essay (with my original comments and your new comments written on it) Thursday.
  • Complete practice set #2 in the appositive phrases unit as instructed. Download the template emailed to you; follow the directions in the book AND in the template. Bring a PRINTOUT of your complete practice set responses to class on Thursday, our next meeting day.
  • Study your BR rules.

R, 8/27: (1) We went over our BR at the beginning of class. (2) Next, we went over and discussed APP practice set #2. (3) We then did a bit more in-class writing using APPs. (5) Then, APP practice sets #3 and #4 were discussed and assigned.

HW:

  • Complete practice sets 3 and 4 in the appositive phrases unit as instructed. Download the set 3 template emailed to you; follow the directions in the book AND in the template. For practice set 4, follow the instructions in the book and from class (there's no need for a template). Bring a PRINTOUT of your complete practice set responses (3 and 4) to class on Monday, our next meeting day.

(3) We then discussed the expectations and requirements for the "Putting the Appositive Phrase to Work" exercise on page 11 in the text. (4) Then, we began the next unit in the text: participial phrases.

HW:

  • Complete "Putting the Appositive Phrase to Work" as directed in class. Bring a PRINTOUT of this assignment to room 2 TOMORROW (9/1) prior to 8 A.M.
    • two separate sentences
    • each sentence contains two appositive phrases
    • each appositive phrase renames a different word
    • each appositive phrase is a minimum of ten words in length
    • place your appositive phrases in bold
    • underline the word in each appositive and the corresponding word it renames in your main sentence
  • Complete participial phrases practice set #1 and bring a PRINTOUT to class on Wednesday, our next class meeting day.
  • Study your BR rules.
