Ms. Rochelle                                               Summer Reading Rockets/Homework Due Friday, July 22, 2011

Dear Students and Parents,

Hello and welcome to another exciting new year at Penngrove School.  I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you.

We will be spending some time the next few days, sharing and becoming familiar with each other, school rules, and routines.  In an effort to get started on that process, parents please fill out the student profile page and return it as soon as possible.  It is very helpful to get a chance to hear from you and to gain insight about your child.  Please feel free to stop by and say hello.  We will also have an opportunity to meet on Back to School Night next Thursday, July 28 @ 6:30.  I will also have sign-ups for classroom volunteers at that time.

It is my goal to provide an equitable classroom environment where all students are given the same opportunities for learning, thinking, and growing.  One part of that is having common classroom supplies.  Therefore, I have provided each student with a pencil box, a box of 24 crayons, a glue stick, several pencils, and an eraser to keep in their desk.  I will also be providing composition books for math, science, writing, and spelling.  I also provide a class set of scissors, rulers, staplers, colored pencils, and markers.  If you would like to donate money for supplies, that is always welcome.  We could also use replenishing of supplies such as markers, pencils, erasers (end of pencil), glue sticks, and white printer paper (it can be recycled paper with print on one side), Kleenex tissues, and hand sanitizer.  Students will need to get a homework folder.  This can be a folder with any cover design and two pockets.  I will be collecting folders every Friday, so please try to have a folder this Friday if possible.  If not, by the following Friday will be fine.  If you wish to purchase supplies for your child to have besides what is already provided, please remind them to keep them in their back pack, save for use at home, or donate it to the classroom community.  Thank you in advance!

There is a new lunch schedule this year.  Students will be having a lunch recess at 12:00pm and then eating lunch at from 12:25 to 12:45.  This is a new approach by having play time first, and then eating.  This will ideally maximize eating time.  In order to help your child maintain between meals, please be sure to provide your child with a generous snack daily.  We will be having snack after the first recess, from 10:25am-10:40am.  We can always use extra snack donations such as pretzels, granola bars, crackers, fruit, etc. for those who forget to bring one or are extra hungry. Thank you.

Homework will consist of reading, studying math facts, and special projects throughout the year.  Most other homework will be done in class, and may be sent home if extra time is needed.  I will address this more on Back to school night.  For the next two days, homework will be only two things.

  1. Read for at least 20 minutes every day.  Record your minutes on the rocket.
  2. Mystery Item Activity.  Find and item at home that you feel is something special about you.  (Make sure it is okay to bring this item school.)  This item will hopefully give us some understanding about you.  Hide it in a paper bag, or box, so no one will know what it is.  Think about how you would describe this item without naming what it is.  What does it look like(color, shape, size)?  What does it feel like? What is it used for?  Why or how did you get it? You can start writing ideas down on the index card, and bring it to class with you on Friday, July 23rd.  We will spend some time working on writing sentence clues before we begin playing the guessing game.  Enjoy and have fun with this!

Example:  Ms. Rochelle’s Item

My object is shaped like a cylinder on one end.  On the other end, it is a sphere shape.  It is silver on the cylinder part, black on the sphere.  It has tiny holes on the sphere.  It has a chord coming out of the end of the cylinder.  There is a switch on the side.  It is made of metal and feels cool and smooth, unless you hold it for a while, then it warms up.  If you are nervous when you use it, it might get sweaty.  It is a tool to amplify sound.  It is something I use often to when I work on my favorite hobby.  What is it?
