Poetry Unit Test
Study Guide
PART A of your test on Friday will consist of questions on your Poetry Literary Terms. You will be given the definition of 10 poetry literary terms, and you must supply the correct term. You will be given 5 definitions to match to the correct term. You will be given 5 sentences with a blank space where you must write in the correct literary term to finish the sentence.
PART B of your test on Friday will consist of 28 multiple choice questions. You will be given four poems to read. You then must apply the following strategies for reading poetry to these poems in order to interpret the poems and answer the questions:
- Read according to punctuation
- Use your senses
- Identify the speaker
- Describe the speaker
- Compare and contrast the speakers in different poems
- Paraphrase
- Count stanzas
- Count lines per stanza
- Determine rhyme scheme
- Determine type of poem
- Recognize figurative language/sound devices (metaphors, similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, etc.)
- Recognize a refrain
- Recognize whom/what the speaker is addressing
