Disclosure Statement

Course Description:

The purpose for this course is to introduce student’s to ceramics, and the terms and techniques involved in the formative process. Students will have the opportunity to learn how ceramics have changed or evolved throughout history, and the historical factors that contributed to these changes. Students will also be introduced to contemporary artists, and how their ceramics associate with the world we live in today. Methods of production, and aesthetics (personal philosophies regarding artwork) will be tailored too in this class.

Course Objectives:

Students will produce original pieces of art, through formative processes involving clay, processes involve, hand building, coils, slabs, and throwing on a wheel.

Students will gain an appreciation for ceramics in art history and the role that art plays in our current society.

Students will learn how to conduct critiques in a professional manner. Students will be evaluating peer projects, and dissect formative processes such as craftsmanship and aesthetics.

Class Rules:

1- Be respectful, students are to be respectful to their peers, and teacher. Students will demonstrate this respect by keeping their hands to themselves, abstaining from vulgar and offensive language, and respecting their neighbors work space.

2- Be prepared, studio projects will be worked on in class almost every day, that means students need to come prepared for work. Preparedness includes: having your clay and tools to work with, a sketchbook to take notes, and create concepts.

3- Listen and follow directions, Instruction may be repeated and demoed to students for their benefit. However, the teacher should never have to repeat himself for the sake of an inattentive student. Listen, take notes, and follow the parameters presented.

4- No Food, water bottles allowed, but no food. A scheduled lunchtime is appointed to students, there is no need to address this when they are scheduled to work in a class. If students suffer from diabetes, hypoglycemia, or any other health problems that may necessitate food, students are require to address this with their school and teachers, provisions will be made to accommodate these students in class.

5- Respect the content, this is an elective course, however its content should be valued like any other core class. This class is not an easy A! It will be challenging and rigorous at times. Students are to understand that the course is meaningful to the teacher, and he expects the content of the class to be respected as much as him. Negative language directed toward content is highly inappropriate, and will resort to repercussions.

 

Consequences: will follow in chronological order. *If a situation that threatens the safety of the class and school. The teacher reserves the right to bypass any policy associated with classroom rules.

1-Verbal reminder, if a student defies classroom policy.

2- After class student will have a conduct conversation with teacher.

3- Student will be assigned menial work instead of the assigned assignment away from other students, and have a conduct evaluation after class.

Grading and Attendance Policies:

Students will be evaluated and graded on craftsmanship, production, and work ethics. The majority of their grade will encompass completing the assigned projects and following the parameters associated with the project. Students conduct and behavior will also be accounted for in the grading procedure. Brainstorming, and conceptual thinking will be demonstrated by working in sketchbooks and producing pieces of art from these images. Student Attendance is required (revert to school policies regarding absences and tardiness) I will be following the schools criteria.

Make-up and Late Work Policy: I will accept late work up to a week after the due date. There will be a 15% grade reduction if the work is late. Anything handed in after a week grace period will not be accepted.

Safety: Students will be working around kilns, and wheels. Safety precautions have been made to ensure the safety of the student, however, if a student’s conduct endangers anyone including themselves, school disciplinary measures may be taken.

Class Fee:

A $40.00 lab fee is required for the production of this class.
