Dear Parent(s), Guardian(s), & Caregiver(s),

We are extremely pleased to welcome you and your child to the sixth grade!  We look forward to an extraordinary academic year serving as your student’s educators.  We hope your student’s summer vacation was pleasant and stimulating for you both.  As the students begin this school year, we need to discuss ways to help them receive the maximum positive learning experience from his/her daily school attendance.  Together we can plan ways of helping your student to succeed.

The school day begins at 8:30am with greetings and announcements in the school yard.  Instruction will begin promptly at 8:45am and end at 3:09pm.  Your student will receive rigorous instruction from several teachers as they will switch classes for all subject areas.  It is important for your student to be on time and prepared with the necessary tools to obtain success in the classroom daily.  Homework is assigned daily and due the next day, unless otherwise noted.  In sixth grade, we utilize the student agenda books as a three-way communication tool between students, parents/guardians/caregivers, and teachers.  The agenda book will include daily homework assignments, upcoming events/reminders, daily behavior grade and special notes for your attention.  At this time, we are requesting that you check and sign you student’s agenda book daily!

In order to provide our students with the excellent educational climate they deserve, we will utilize the following Classroom Discipline Plan at all times.  This plan will ensure that your student is always on time, on target, and on task.  Following is a list of classroom expectations along with the rewards and consequences.  Please review them at home with your student.

  1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
  2. Come to class daily prepared to learn.
  3. Respect yourself as well as others.
  4. Raise your head before speaking or leaving your seat.
  5. Complete all assignments correctly and submit on time.

As educators, we strongly believe that having the best education is key to a successful future.  We must ensure this by making certain that all students conduct themselves appropriately, because every student has the right to be educated in an environment that is conducive to learning.

Your child has reviewed this plan in class, and we would appreciate if you would further discuss in detail the contents of this letter with him/her before signing and returning the attached form.  If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact us at the school by calling 215-456-3002 or via email at kbrandon@philasd.org , vludovici@philasd.org, or llesher@philasd.org.  We have provided you a "ways to communicate" sheet for your reference.

In addition to the signature sheet, you have been provided with the sixth grade supply list.  Please place it on your refrigerator and use it as a check-off list.  Ensuring that your child has all of the required supplies beginning on or before Monday, September 10, 2012 would enable your child to start the year off strong!! Please let us know if there are any concerns with obtaining any of the supplies listed.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and parental support.  We look forward to meeting you at BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 FROM 5:00PM – 7:00PM.
