Technology is growing part of not just everyday life but everyday life in school. With each passing year the students are walking into our classrooms with a larger verity of technology experience. As a teacher it is important to keep them safe while using the Technology at school. Before allowing the students on any device at school it is important to teach our expectations on how to use and care for the device. The above link is the technology agreement that I have made for my 1st grade students. I read it to them explaining and answering questions as needed. I then send it home so the parents are also aware of my expectation for the students while using the different devices in my classroom.
This has been a good thing for the parents to see and sign with their students. Many of the students think that the computer is a toy. I think this has helped the parents realize that they are and will continue to use the computers in school to complete assignments. I think it also help's both parent and student under stand the they are responsible for the child's actions while on the computer. As the technology I use changes in the classroom I will update the document to match.
Internet Safety Lesson
It is important to educate the students on internet safety. They need to know that not everything they find online is safe even if it looks valid. The students need to understand that they never give any information to any web site without asking permission from an adult. Above is a lesson plan for internet safety that I teach to my 1st graders.
I find this lesson to be one of the most important I teach. Students are very trusting and in today's world can very easily be taken advantage of, in so many ways. I personally watched a close family member come close to trusting someone they meet on line at the age of 17 and was ready to run off and meet them. It is so important to start teaching internet safety at a young age so the students know it's okay to question and trust their gut. Part of that is to tell an adult and make sure what they are going into is safe. It's not just on line safety our students need to think about. It's every day safety as they are roaming the neighborhoods. This lesson hits both personal and online safety. I know my students learned from it because several times during this year I have had them shut there screens and call me over to help. It has always been okay but I have made a big deal over the fact that they did the right thing by showing me. One thing that I need to do is make sure to review this lesson later in the year to make sure any new students also understand the importance of being safe online.
