In class, I may have you access this site for research, lessons, and activities. Please feel free to access it at home for any information you may need.

About Jr. High Composition

In refining our composition skills, we will constantly be working on drafting, editing, and revising, but we will also have several composition contests that we will participate in throughout the year. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Patriot’s Pen VFW Essay Contest
  • Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Essay Contest
  • Illinois History Fair Research Essay
  • Modern Woodmen of America Speech Contest

Students will be able to:

  • engage in informal writing assignments (i.e. pieces of writing that they do not take through the entire writing process).
  • engage in formal writing assignments that require utilization of all stages of the writing process.
  • effectively access resources (in print and on the web) to complete written assignments.
  • choose and use a relevant pre-writing strategy to prepare for an assignment.
  • write several rough drafts of a paper to revise for clarity and depth of content or to edit style and mechanics.
  • engage in peer conferences during any or all stages of the writing process.
  • write for various audiences and purposes.
  • evaluate their own writing according to established criteria and rubrics.
  • deliver a clear, coherent oral presentation.


  1. Since composition class will revolve around the steps of the writing process, students will write/type all composition assignments at school under teacher supervision and guidance.
  2. Plagiarism is cheating and will not be tolerated in Mrs. Danner’s Composition class. Students who purposefully copy & paste work that is not their own will be penalized accordingly.

Sixth grade will really dive into the writing process for the first time. They have been exposed to the terminology, but this year’s Composition class will allow them to practice this knowledge. Students will have many opportunities to prewrite, draft, revise, edit, peer edit, and turn in their work.

Seventh grade has practiced with the writing process and will now begin to form an argument in their writing. Students will learn to back up their arguments with sound reasoning (logos), emotional appeal (pathos), and researched findings (ethos). They will practice citation skills in their research.

Eighth grade will focus on the revision stage of the writing process. Each piece written this year will be kept in a portfolio. This not only allows students to see their progress, but will also give them an opportunity to make their work better. 8th grade is also responsible for a monthly newsletter distributed to all grades at NHCS. Students will see their work published on a small scale.


A Note from the Teacher:

This is my fourth year teaching at NHCS. I have a bachelor’s degree in English Education from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR. I am currently living in Robinson with my  husband and 2 daughters. I attended New Hebron, preschool through 8th Grade, and participated in basketball, quiz bowl, and cross country. I am a member of Pleasant Ridge Christian Church, where I lead worship and direct VBS. I enjoy reading, camping, and spending time with my little family. I love all things writing, and I am so excited to get to teach it again here at NHCS!
