Congratulations on your choice to pursue English 1 Online! My name is Denise Christie and I will be your instructor for the next 9 weeks. Before you get started, I encourage you to review the materials on this website and direct any questions to me via email. My contact information is listed under contact information.
The course will be asynchronous and allow for student flexibility in submission; however, there are timelines and due dates listed in the electronic classroom.
This is a required course for graduation. It is the first step in an integrated sequence of instruction in the language arts essential skills. Thematic units introduce students to the writing process as well as skills and knowledge for reading comprehension necessary in passing the AIMS exam which students take in Grade 10. There will be a strong emphasis in grammar, essay and letter writing. Students will focus on the importance of a strong thesis statement in a standard essay. It is the standard of this course and school for each student to have integrity. Any work submitted by a student in this course must be the student’s own work. You are encouraged to study together and to discuss information and concepts covered in class and the sections with other students. Should you choose to copy, both the student who copied the work and the student who gave the material to be copied will be choosing to receive a zero for the assignment. This applies for all assignments and tests.
As we embark on this journey, I encourage you to reflect on the reasons for your decision to pursue online learning. Online learning requires participation and self motivation. If you need help, do not be afraid to ask for it. Please e-mail as necessary to discuss any possibility of late work or absence from class for any extended periods of time.
Before continuing on this journey, your first class assignment is to take this online quiz to see how well suited you are for online learning.
