What is S.O.A.R?
S.O.A.R. stands for Self-esteem Occurs from Acceptance and Respect. This is the fourth year that this anti-bullying/character education program will be implemented at Thomas Hunter. S.O.A.R. is based on the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program and the first three years of the program were funded through a grant with Virginia Commonwealth University.
This research based program is school wide and focuses on changing the school norms regarding bullying. One of the main goals is to move students from being an observer/witness that does not say anything, to someone that steps in and helps in a bullying situation.
Individual interventions will occur as needed.
All staff have been training in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.
Teachers hold weekly classroom meetings with their students.
A discipline policy is in place regarding bullying.
Presentations have been made to outside agencies regarding the program.
