Element One

ELEMENT 1: TEACHERS KNOW THEIR SUBJECT CONTENT AND HOW TO TEACH THAT CONTENT TO THEIR STUDENTS

I have...

developed strong skills in utilising the NSW Board of Studies syllabus documents and curriculum requirements of the Education Act to design and implement effective lessons and units of work. This is synonymous for my familiarity with subject content and the pedagogies of the content being taught. I have benefited from my past four years at university undertaking units of study in various Key Learning Areas and the various practicum that I have completed.  Appendix A demonstrates my knowledge of Creative Arts subject content, syllabus documents and other curriculum requirements. This lesson sequence highlights my ability to sequence lessons that are stage appropriate, content-rich, linked to other KLAs and cater for different learning styles and abilities.

I feel very confident in my ability to utilise information and communication technologies and in my ability to incorporate these into my lessons. During my practicum at Woollahra Public School, I took a series of computer lessons in which I used an Interactive Whiteboard to guide the students through the lesson. Appendix B is evidence of a lesson that introduced students to making charts and pie graphs in Microsoft Office Excel. I also utilised internet-based learning activities from educational websites to further develop students’ learning in the Science and Technology subject, Simple Machines.

I will...

enhance my knowledge of how to teach various KLAs more effectively and incorporate ICT into my lessons. I will also become more familiar with Stage Three content, relevant syllabuses and other curriculum documents.

I need...

to examine more research on the pedagogies of the content that I will be teaching in my career. I can do this by looking at current, peer-reviewed educational literature, subscribing to newsletters and observing more experienced teachers teach different KLAs. I also believe that I need more experience using Interactive Whiteboards and the accompanying Notebook software. I would like to increase my knowledge and ability so that I am able to use it effectively in the event that I am placed at a school with an Interactive Whiteboard in my classroom. I also need to gain practical experience teaching stage three this year and making myself more familiar with relevant documents.

 I believe...

that quality teaching relies heavily upon a teacher’s knowledge, confidence and delivery of subject content. This content, must be planned, implemented and delivered with careful consideration of current and relevant syllabuses and New South Wales Board of Studies documents. I feel that the knowledge of content and relevant documents lay the foundation for quality teaching. However, I believe that teachers must also immerse themselves in current literature about the pedagogies of the content being taught, professional development days and be able to use relevant technology to teach that content. In today’s world, teachers must keep furthering their knowledge of information and communication technologies to cater for a generation of children, most of who are exposed to information technology on a daily basis. I believe that it is important to provide students with lessons that incorporate software and the internet that are linked to subject content where available and appropriate. Students thoroughly enjoy lessons on the Interactive Whiteboard and can learn valuable ICT skills when basic operations are modelled by the teacher.
