Other Problems with Modifiers

Double Comparison:

You can only use one method of forming the comparative/superlataive form of an adjective or modifer.  Simply put you may not use MORE with ER (More fresher is wrong, it is fresher)  That is most funniest (most funnierst is wrong, it is most funny.)

EXAMPLES:

That is the most highest peak in the Ozark mountains. (WRONG)

That is the highest peak in the Ozark mountains. (CORRECT)

You couldn't be more differenter if you tried. (WRONG)

You couldn't be more different if you tried. (CORRECT)

USING OTHER and ELSE:

If you are using the word ANY to compare, make sure that OTHER comes right after it.

He is funnier than any other person I know.

If you are using the word ANYONE to compare, make sure that the word ELSE comes right after it.

Sheilia has won more races that anyone else has won.

Compare only items of a similar kind.  Illogical Comparison occurs when you compare one item to a different item or no item at all.

Examples:

ILLOGICAL COMPARISON:  The apples are redder than the Smith's.  (You are not comparing the apples to anything in this sentence)

LOGICAL COMPARISON:     The apples are redder than the Smith's bought apples.  (You are comparing apples to bought apples)

ILLOGICAL COMPARISON:  The club's rec. room is bigger than the community centers.  (You are not comparing club's rec. room to anything)

LOGICAL COMPAISON:  The club's rec. room is bigger than the community centers rec. room. (You are comparing one rec. room to another rec. room.)

DOUBLE NEGATIVES:

Do not use two negative words in the same sentence as they cancel each other out.

Common Negatives

but (meaning only)                     none

hardly                                          not (n't)

never                                           nothing

no                                                 only

no body                                        scarely

***Do not use two of the above negatives together.

To correct a double negative in a sentence remove one of the negatives.  You can use the words ANY or ANYTHING to replace one of the negatives.

EXAMPLES:

She doesn't need no money for the movies. (Wrong)

She dosen't need ANY money for the movies. (Correct)

She doesn't need money for the movies. (Correct)

Tarack hardly never calls me anymore. (Wrong)

Tark hardly calls me anymore (Correct)

Tarak never calls me anymore. (Correct)

***REMEMBER:  Replace one of the negatives, and you have fixed the double negative error.
