The Introduction to Technology

1) SketchUp incorporates (Mathematics, Geometry, Spatial Reasoning, Computer-aided design (CAD), etc.) It is important to provide every child with a solid foundation in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) thinking abilities to prepare them for 21st century degrees and careers. The last 4 items in STEAM (Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) will be highly used in class to design lines, curves, and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or curves, surfaces, and solids into three-dimensional (3D) objects. SketchUp is perfect tool for project-based learning for example product design and architecture. When 3D becomes part of the classroom, it becomes part of how students think and solve problems. Reading, writing, and arithmetic are central to learning, but in the decades to come, so are problem solving, critical thinking and even product design. SketchUp helps students to think critically, interact with technology—and when they mess up, learn from it, keep trying and eventually, mentor each other. When learning SketchUp I personally learned more from my mistakes than my successes.

2) Microsoft Office: Using Microsoft Word students will create documents and learn how to copy, cut and paste. They will also learn how to change margins, font size and color, and create bold, italics, and underline words. Students will learn how to insert a picture and then format the picture in front or behind text or how to wrap the picture around the text as well. They will also learn how to create superscript (22), subscript (H2O) and strikethrough text. Students will learn how to create headers and footers and how to change the orientation of a page from portrait to landscape and how to change the margins on the page as well. They will also create WordArt and text boxes and learn how to left align, center align, and right align text, as well as how to indent text using the Tab key and create bulleted and sub bulleted list. They will create tables in Word and insert formulas in the cells of the table to get the totals from certain columns and/or rows. Students will also create their own bookmarkers, timelines, certificates, as well as fictional greeting cards, flyers, etc. Using Microsoft PowerPoint students will create different slide show presentations including but not limited to, a Math Millionaire game with hyperlinks, a Jeopardy game with hyperlinks, a Solar System presentation with hyperlinks and animated gifs, etc. Students will learn how to create an appropriate theme for the presentation, animated images and text, and how to insert transitions between slides. Using Microsoft Excel students will create bar graphs and pie charts that will then be re-colored and labeled (titled) appropriately. They will also create a Code Cracking spreadsheet and a Checkbook spreadsheet where they will insert their own formulas to get the desired results. Students will learn how to work with ‘IF statements’ in formulas and how to create different worksheets in the same Excel spreadsheet. Students will also learn how to hide columns in Excel as well as filter, and sort data.
