The Purpose of HOMEWORK in Greenie’s First Grade

Homework is a very worthwhile part of your child’s day and it is very important to his / her success in school. We use it as a way to review and practice important skills learned in the classroom.

Homework encourages responsibility and should not be viewed as a punishment but as a way to help your child succeed in school. One way to teach responsibility is by expecting your child to complete homework.

Homework is normally assigned Tuesday and Thursday. I usually do not assign homework on Fridays. It should take your child no more than 15 minutes to complete. Pleasure reading together with your child should happen nightly (you should read to model fluidity, expression, interpretation of information, and attention to punctuation; your child should do some of the reading as a
practice to what they are learning from you.)

Parents, you are the key to making homework a positive experience for your child. So please, make it a priority, provide the necessary supplies, and a quiet learning environment. If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me (gogreenie@comcast.net) or call me at home (847-296-7798)

Some ways parents can help their child with homework are:
*    Have a specific time each day to complete homework
*    Make sure it is in a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place.
*    Make sure there are no distractions (music playing, TV blaring).
*    Help your child, but PLEASE, do not do their homework for them.
