Dear 2nd Grade Parents,

Ms. Whitfield and Mrs. Dalizu (Du-lee-zoo) welcome you and your child to 2nd Grade. We look forward to having a productive year.

Our School day starts at 7:45 and ends at 2:30. Please ensure that your child is at school on time. This will ensure that your child will participate in all the day’s instructions. 2nd grade Lunch is from 11:50 to12:20. Please feel free to come and have lunch with your child. (Please note that this is not a conference time).

As the year starts please take the time to read the Huntsville City School Officials Student- Parent Handbook.  We would especially like you to pay attention to the Dress Code, Rights and Responsibilities Policies and the Attendance Policy. Our Classroom Regulations do include the HCS handbook.  Then complete all the necessary paper work and return them to school as soon as possible.

We further request that you assist us throughout the school year by keeping track of your child’s discipline log, which will be kept in your child’s homework folder. This will be sent home on a daily basis starting on 8/11/10. You are to initial the log each day. If your child misplaces this daily folder please replace it as soon as possible. This folder may also be an ideal place to send any notes to your child’s teacher.

Your child’s graded papers will come home every Tuesday in the Mustang folder; you may review the work with your child where possible. If this Mustang folder gets lost it can be replaced by paying $1.00. (Only if we have extra copies on hand.)

The demands for 2nd grade reading fluency are rigorous. By the end of the Year your child should be able to read 90 words a minute   Please read with your child at least 15 minutes each day. This will expose your child to a variety of vocabulary that will increase their reading fluency.

Homework is assigned every day. A “C” or a “+” sign at the top of the homework or class work indicates that the assignment is satisfactory.  A minus sign at the top of the page means the work is unsatisfactory.

Finally, please ensure that your child knows how they will get home each day. Phone calls during the day interrupt instruction. Whenever your child’s after school pick up plans change please send a note with your child stating how they will be getting home that day.
